چکیده

This paper evaluates a large-scale pilot program run by a company called OPOWER, previously known as Positive Energy, to mail home energy use reports to residential utility consumers. The reports include energy conservation information as well as social comparisons between a household’s energy use and that of its neighbors. Using data from a randomized natural …eld experiment at 80,000 treatment and control households in Minnesota, I estimate that the monthly program reduces energy consumption by 1.9 to 2.0 percent relative to baseline. In a treatment arm receiving reports each quarter, the e¤ects decay over the months between letters and increase again upon receipt of the next letter. I provide evidence to suggest that at least some of this e¤ect is because consumers’attention is malleable and non-durable. I show that “pro…ling,” or using a statistical decision rule to target the program at households whose observable characteristics predict larger treatment e¤ects, could substantially improve cost e¤ectiveness in future programs. The results provide additional evidence that non-price “nudges” can substantially a¤ect consumer behavior. JEL Codes: C44, D03, L94, Q41. Keywords: Social norms, attention, energy demand, randomized …eld experiments, statistical treatment rules, pro…ling. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — I thank, without implicating, Ian Ayres, Bob Cialdini, Tyler Curtis, Rajeev Dehejia, Kenny Gillingham, Larry Goulder, Matt Harding, Kosuke Imai, Seema Jayachandran, Karthik Kalyanaraman, Ogi Kavazovic, Alex Laskey, Aprajit Mahajan, Sendhil Mullainathan, Dave Rapson, Todd Rogers, Eldar Sha…r, and seminar participants at Harvard, Stanford, and the Environmental Defense Fund for helpful conversations related to this project. An Agent-Based Simulation of Employing Social Norms in Energy Conservation in Households

Social norms play an important role in shaping human behaviour. They guide people how to behave under certain circumstances by informing what is permitted and prohibited. Research works have shown that social norms can be successfully employed in promoting sustainable practices such as energy conservation. In particular, the combined effect of descriptive and injunctive norms has been shown to ...

A Light Bulb Goes On: Norms, Rhetoric, and Actions for the Public Good

This paper explores whether invoking social norms, in the context of a persuasive appeal, affects individuals’ willingness to take action for the public good. The framework I develop brings together a host of factors treated as distinct in past work, including attitudes, rhetoric, and social norms. I test predictions from this framework in an experiment that focuses on a particularly important ...

A Light Bulb Goes On: Values, Attitudes, Social Norms, and Personal Energy Consumption

When do people take political action? What roles do values, elite rhetoric, and social norms play in motivating action? These questions are of obvious importance for those interested in political behavior; however, little work – other than research on participation – explores the impact of these various factors. This study offers a framework that generates hypotheses about the role of values, r...

Explaining Energy Conservation and Environmental Citizenship Behaviors Using the Value-Belief-Norm Framework

Despite decades of research, uncertainty remains about what motivates individuals to engage in pro-environmental behavior. The multifaceted and complex nature of energy conservation, like other forms of pro-environmental behavior, still poses a challenge to efforts at accurately explaining or predicting it. This paper examines the extent to which variables in the value-belief-norm framework are...
